Last month, Teachmate was proud to deliver a CPD webinar in collaboration with NASUWT focused on the safe, secure and effective use of AI in education.

The session, delivered by Lindsay Round (Head of Product) and Leah Magnall (Head of Community Engagement) at Teachmate, explored both the opportunities and risks associated with AI in schools, alongside practical guidance to help teachers and leaders make informed decisions around its use.

Sonja Hall, Principal Official (Education) at NASUWT, said:

“NASUWT has established principles for the safe and ethical use of AI in education. Teachmate’s webinar was very helpful as it built on these principles and explored some of the key things that teachers need to consider when making judgements about the ethical use of AI.”

The webinar reflected NASUWT’s principles for the ethical design, development, procurement and implementation of AI and digital technologies, with discussion points including:

  • Data protection and GDPR compliance
  • Bias and inaccuracies in AI-generated content
  • Intellectual property considerations
  • Safe platform design and responsible implementation
  • The importance of AI literacy and professional judgement
  • Best practice for using AI to support teachers

The session also explored the difference between general AI tools and education-specific platforms, alongside practical demonstrations of how AI can be used responsibly to support planning, resource creation and workload reduction.

Over 400 NASUWT members signed up to attend the session, reflecting the growing appetite across the profession for practical, balanced guidance around AI in education. With one member noting that the session provided:

“An excellent starting point for me. I haven’t yet used AI in the classroom; I am no IT expert but I am sufficiently IT informed and literate to know that AI is not a tool I should be using before first educating myself around 1) the risks and 2) the best way to utilise it. The webinar content met my personal need perfectly.”

As part of the session, Teachmate emphasised a key principle that sits at the heart of its approach, namely that AI should support teachers as experts, not substitute their professional judgement. The focus was on using AI as a collaborative tool that empowers educators, while maintaining critical thinking, safeguarding and professional expertise.

This was the first in a series of AI-focused webinars and sessions planned by NASUWT, and Teachmate is proud to support conversations that help educators navigate AI safely and with confidence.
